From a young age she was passionate about performing and would take any opportunity to perform on stage. Parents made sure that she had dance lessons, and she was also trained at the Santa Monica Playhouse when she was a kid. She started acting in 1996 when she was offered the role in the TV drama Party of Five. She was accepted into New York University, but Kate Hudson was more interested in getting into show business than obtaining the degree. After appearing in a handful of small films She was then offered the role that would be her breakthrough in her career. She was cast as Penny Lane in the comedy-drama film Almost Famous. Even though the film was unsuccessful at the box office , it was well-received by the critics and helped make Kate a star in the American film industry.
