April Ross
April Ross is only one of only a handful of beach volleyball players who have earned medals more than once at an Olympics. She is set to compete in Tokyo for her 3rd Olympic medal alongside Alix Klineman, who is a first-time Olympian. In addition, Ross is aiming to capture her very first Olympic gold. Perhaps she has one chance, at 39 years old. However, she's convinced that top prizes are in reach. Ross, via NBC Boston, said that if the team plays very well, or even at all, it could be able to win gold. Additionally, I'm going to rely on a bit of good luck. Ross was born in California in Costa Mesa in 1982. She lived here along with her parents and younger sister. Ross was a competitive athlete in a variety of activities while at Newport Harbor High School. She played basketball and ran track in addition to her indoor volleyball achievements as a pre-collegiate athlete. She was definitely a cut above the rest in this latter game. The college bio says that she played outside of the hitter, middle blocker, as well as a setter in her volleyball playing career during high school. Her achievements were rewarded when she was named 1999 Gatorade's National Circle of Champions players of the year. Her volleyball skills also brought her an Orange County Athlete of the Years trophy in the year 2000. Ross and Klineman began the partnership in 2017, However, Ross was a beach scene star for years before. She actually won numerous major events with two different partners, among them an icon of volleyball. Jennifer Kessy was her partner for six years, between 2007 and 2013. Also, she coached Klineman and herself. Together with Kessy Ross, she won a World Title in 2009 when she competed on the international circuit. They took home a Silver medal during the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. Misty Maytreanor's legendary team as well as Kerri Jennings took home the gold. As fate would have it Ross was Walsh Jennings' new partner as May-Treanor stepped down. The team won bronze in beach volleyball during the Rio Olympics in 2016. Ross began her collegiate career with the USC Trojans after her high school days. The Trojans were a few years away from when Ross made her debut on the beach and became a pro. It was a successful career for Ross in the college level. In 2000 she was voted Pac-10 Freshman and NCAA Freshman of the Year and an All-American. The Trojans had the chance to reach the Final Four with her help. During her sophomore year she experienced a devastating personal setback, but she was able to make it back as an All-American. Through her last two years within the team, she guided the Trojans towards the summit of the mountain netting consecutive national championships. She was a fantastic volleyball player and won the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the top female college volleyball player. Ross played international relations as a student at USC. Margie Ross, Ross' mother, did not have the chance to watch Ross' daughter blossom into an international beach volleyball star. When Ross was a sophomore in USC her mother passed away from breast cancer. This meant that Ross remains near to her mother who passed away. Margie has been an inspiration both in her personal life and at the beach.
